Using as much of the raw sesame seed as possible, our Whole Sesame Tahini offers a fabulous earthy version of this healthy, gluten-free, Middle-Eastern staple. The Whole Sesame Tahini offers a slightly nuttier taste than other types, making it a unique choice for the discerning chef.
Like our other tahini products, the sesame seed makes up 100% of the ingredients of the Whole Sesame Tahini. However, whereas other tahini options undergo the hulling process to remove the chaff; this Whole Tahini incorporates this notoriously rich element of the seed in the final product. The production of the seeds is of vital importance to the East Jerusalem Goods Company; after all, our very high standards can only be met if the raw materials are of the best quality. For this reason we and our specialist chef Kamel Hashalmon source our seeds from the world renowned sesame region of Humera, Ethiopia. Here, we have handpicked fair trade farmers, who nurse our seeds from fertilization to harvest. The seeds are shipped to Israel where Kamel inspects them for quality, before starting the ancient art of tahini production. The time-tested way of creating the highest quality tahini is a slow grind between high quality stones; Kamel has just the thing – antique millstones formed from the basalt rock of the Golan Heights. These stones slowly and gradually grind the whole sesame seed in to the paste that we jar and ship direct to your door, bring a deep, rich, element of the Middle-Eastern kitchen to your home.
Whilst all of the East Jerusalem Goods Company tahini pastes are healthy; the Whole Sesame Tahini is especially healthy, as all of the original nutrients from the seed are retained. The sesame seed was first cultivated around three and a half millennia ago, and since then it has been an intrinsic part of the diet in the eastern Mediterranean, in no small part because of its excellent protein and calcium contents, as well as various other nutrients and antioxidants. For the modern chef or foodie, our tahini ticks a variety of sought after boxes; gluten free, vegan, organic, fair trade, all in addition to its intrinsic health benefits.
